A crime fighter with a smile...what?!

As popular as crime thriller television series go, I find them to be too stereotypical when it comes to depicting crime fighters.

The main character, whether he or she is a cop, detective or agent of some law enforcement branch, is generally depicted as having a dysfunctional intimate relationship or marriage and incapable of keeping one in tact. Moreover, and this is the case in about 95% of the series I have watched, their partners are always upset, complaining and even leaving the relationship because their crime fighting counterparts put their crime-fighting agenda ahead of being home. It is as if none of these partners realized when they entered a relationship with someone in law enforcement, that finding murderers and such would take priority and would not be a 9 to 5 job.

Secondly, they tend to depict law enforcement characters as very serious, unsmiling and deeply troubled people with childhood traumas and such.

Third, they tend to make them appear as if every crime they set out to solve is personal.

That said, I intentionally went another direction with my crime thriller series, the counter-opposite of the stereotypical character shown in these series, where the main character who heads up the Canadian Royal Mounted Police anti-terrorism unit, is flippant, insouciant, laughs a lot, takes great risks, bleeds, smiles in the face of bullets, happily puts the bad guys six feet under without a second thought, and who loves just ONE woman, who in turn completely loves him, enough to support him without shaming or guilt-tripping him for doing his job.

The Keeno Crime Thriller Series, four books so far, is a different take on crime fighters - and while full of thrills, action, near-death incidents, Keeno McCole, is a breathe of fresh air.
